Background
Falls with injury present serious clinical and operational challenges in skilled nursing. For Ohio Living, which operates 11 senior living communities across Ohio, protecting residents while preserving mobility and dignity is a core priority. As an organization known for innovation and quality outcomes, Ohio Living evaluates solutions that enhance safety without restricting independence. "Viconic stood out because it focuses on reducing injury when falls occur—without limiting movement," said Adam Fait, Corporate Executive of Facilities at Ohio Living.

The Solution
Ohio Living implemented Viconic® Fall Defense™, a passive flooring underlayment designed to reduce the severity of fall-related injuries without alarms, restraints, or added staff burden. The system was installed within skilled nursing at Ohio Living Westminster Thurber, integrating seamlessly beneath finished flooring and into existing care routines. "You don't see it, but you feel it," said Caitlin Distel, Administrator at Ohio Living Westminster Thurber. "It's subtle, unobtrusive, and fits naturally into the environment."

Results
Clinical outcomes have reinforced the value of built-in protection underfoot. "To date, we have not had a serious injury or fracture from a fall in any room with Viconic flooring," said Samantha Patrick, RN, Director of Nursing at Ohio Living Westminster Thurber. Patrick shared the experience of a resident living with Parkinson's disease who experienced multiple falls without injury while in a Viconic-equipped room. "He's fallen multiple times and has never had an injury on that floor," Patrick said. "From a clinical perspective, that speaks volumes." Beyond resident safety, leadership also recognizes the broader impact—supporting quality measures, minimizing disruption to care delivery, and providing reassurance to families. "This gives families confidence that we're being proactive," Distel added. "It reflects the level of care we're committed to."

What's Next
As Ohio Living plans for future development and construction projects, leadership sees Viconic as a strong fit moving forward. "If I had the choice, I'd put this flooring throughout the building," Patrick said. "It protects residents without taking away independence—and that's exactly what we want."

Conclusion
Ohio Living's experience demonstrates how passive, always-on protection can meaningfully support fall injury management. By reducing injury severity without adding complexity, Viconic aligns with Ohio Living's commitment to safety, dignity, and forward-thinking care.
