Continuing a long-standing trend, resident falls remained far and away the biggest generator of insurance claims against senior living providers, accounting for 75% of the annual total in 2022.

That’s according to an analysis of a decade’s worth of senior living claims data by global insurance broker and professional services firm Marsh McLennan.

The analysis identified 1,190 closed claims resulting in payments associated with resident falls, for a total paid indemnity and expense of $225 million. A single fall claim in 2023 had a projected severity of $189,129, Marsh McLennan found.

The next-largest claim category — abuse — accounted for 89 claims and $24 million in paid indemnity over 10 years, or 5.61% of total claims, according to the analysis. Skin and wound injuries, the third-largest type, led to 72 claims for about 4.5% of the total.

Marsh McLennan’s findings underline the importance in investing in tools and strategies for reducing falls and minimizing resulting injuries for senior living operators — particularly as they project that the frequency and size of claims will increase into the future.
